What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of medicine that has been trusted and practised around the world for more than 200 years.
Whereas orthodox medicine often treats symptoms as problems to be suppressed or controlled, homeopathy works on the principle of “like cures like.” Hippocrates, regarded as the father of medicine, observed that there were two main approaches to healing: the system of opposites and the system of similarities.
Homeopaths see symptoms not only as signs of sickness but also as the body’s attempt to heal itself. Instead of attacking these symptoms, homeopathy values them as important signposts - guiding us towards the root causes of illness and pointing the way to the most effective treatment for the individual.

Homeopathy was formalised by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann, who became disillusioned with the medical practices of his time - often crude and even harmful to patients. While translating a text on Cinchona bark (a source of quinine, then one of the few effective treatments for malaria), Hahnemann questioned why it worked so well against certain fevers. He experimented with the substance himself and discovered that, when taken by a healthy person, it could produce symptoms similar to the very fevers it was known to cure.
This insight gave rise to the principle of “like cures like.” Though versions of this idea had long existed in folklore - in sayings such as “a little of what you fancy does you good” or the “hair of the dog” remedy - it was Hahnemann who gave these observations scientific grounding and shaped them into a coherent system of medicine.
A homeopath uses the symptoms of an illness or complaint as a guide to uncovering its underlying cause. This often involves spending considerable time with the patient, asking detailed questions about their overall health and wellbeing. Unlike the orthodox approach, which may focus primarily on the presenting symptom, homeopathy looks at the wider picture. For instance, a patient with recurring headaches might be experiencing stress, hormonal imbalance, poor diet, inflammation, or a combination of factors - and it’s the homeopath’s role to explore these possibilities in order to identify where the problem truly lies.
Homeopathic medicines are prepared from natural substances that have been carefully tested on healthy volunteers, with every effect observed and recorded in detail. This process allows us to understand the specific symptoms a substance can produce, and therefore the conditions it may be capable of treating. Because of this rigorous approach, and the highly diluted form in which remedies are given, homeopathic medicines are free from toxins and considered safe for people of all ages - including children and babies.
Homeopathy can be effective in supporting both physical and psychological health. It can help in acute illnesses and fevers, assist in first-aid situations, and offer a gentle, holistic option for a wide range of conditions.
